About Gartenbox Bernau
Gartenbox Bernau is a premium partner for outdoor living and smart garden technology in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Its mission is to turn outdoor spaces into tailor-made places for relaxation, leisure and everyday comfort. The company offers full-service solutions from a single source, ranging from automatic irrigation systems and robotic lawn mowers to patio covers, outdoor kitchens and premium grills. At the heart of the business is its large garden showroom in Bernau, where customers can experience the products in person, explore materials and solutions first-hand, and receive expert advice on site.
Step 1
The Challenge
When we took over SEO support for Gartenbox Bernau in early August 2022, the company faced a common challenge for local specialist retailers: its high-quality consulting, premium product range and strong offline expertise were barely reflected online.
Digitally, we were almost starting from scratch. Over the course of our collaboration, the search landscape also changed significantly, driven by AI search, Google AI Overviews and new accessibility requirements. This meant the website had to evolve continuously, both technically and strategically.
Very low digital visibility
At the start of our collaboration, the website had little relevance for search engines. The Sistrix Visibility Index, a metric that measures a domain’s organic visibility on Google based on keyword rankings, search volume and expected click probability, was extremely low at just 0.0005.
Organic Google clicks were almost entirely limited to branded keywords, with only a few exceptions. The ranking data confirmed the same picture: according to Sistrix, the website ranked for only 16 keywords in the Top 10, and just 5 individual URLs appeared on the first pages of Google.
Poor loading times
Beyond digital visibility, the website also had serious technical weaknesses. Our SEO audit showed critically poor loading performance: the mobile PageSpeed score was only 26 out of 100.
The Core Web Vitals, which are highly relevant for Google, also failed. The main content element of the page, measured as Largest Contentful Paint, took 15.6 seconds to load completely. One of the main reasons was a lack of image compression, with almost 44% of images being significantly too large at over 100 KB.
Lack of content depth
From a content perspective, the website did not yet have the depth needed to build strong rankings. There was no guide or blog section to answer user questions and cover informational search intent.
Several on-page issues also stood in the way of growth: the homepage had no H1 heading, many subpages lacked a logical structure, and some “Lorem Ipsum” placeholder texts were still indexable. Important SEO basics were also missing. For example, 66% of images had no alt text, and many pages did not have meta descriptions.
The shift towards AI search
During our collaboration, the search landscape changed rapidly with the rise of generative AI, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The challenge was no longer just to improve classic SEO performance, but to combine it with Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.
We therefore structured the website and its content not only to improve Google rankings, but also to make it easier for large language models to understand, interpret and cite the brand. Strong E-E-A-T signals, meaning Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness, became a central part of the strategy.
New accessibility requirements
With the German Accessibility Strengthening Act becoming increasingly relevant in 2025, another major technical challenge emerged. A dedicated accessibility audit showed that the website was difficult to use for people with disabilities.
The audit identified missing descriptive link texts, missing video subtitles, insufficient text contrast and incorrect ARIA roles for screen readers. ARIA refers to additional HTML attributes in the website code. These attributes help screen readers understand what an element does, what it is called and what state it is in. Without these attributes, people with visual impairments may not be able to clearly understand or fully use certain website elements.
Focus on showroom visits
Gartenbox Bernau’s products are not typical e-commerce products that users simply add to a cart and buy online. The SEO strategy therefore had to focus on qualitative lead generation.
The goal was not only to increase organic traffic, but to build enough trust and digital service quality to motivate users to book consultations and visit the 200-square-meter outdoor showroom in Bernau.
Strong seasonality
Outdoor living, robotic lawn mowers and grills are highly seasonal product categories. While demand rises sharply in spring and summer, search interest naturally drops in winter.
One of the main strategic challenges was therefore to reduce the impact of seasonal traffic dips and keep the website relevant throughout the year.
Step 2
Our Approach
To bring Gartenbox Bernau out of the shadows of the search results and prepare the website for the modern SEO and AI search landscape, we needed a holistic approach.
We did not simply make cosmetic improvements. Instead, we restructured the website from the ground up. The focus was on a clean technical foundation, preparation for new accessibility standards and a large-scale content offensive that brought the company’s offline expertise into the digital space. The goal was clear: every relevant search query, whether on Google or in AI systems like ChatGPT, should be answered with deep, useful content and strong technical signals.
So, we divided the work into two core areas.
Technical SEO and GEO foundation
The first step was to create a technically clean, high-performing foundation that search engines and large language models could crawl, understand and evaluate properly. In 2025, we also provided a clear roadmap for meeting accessibility requirements under the BFSG.
- Crawlability and index cleanup: We removed unnecessary clutter from the index. Irrelevant pages such as “Lorem Ipsum” placeholder pages, thank-you pages and internal test URLs were deindexed and removed from the XML sitemap. As a result, Google’s crawl budget is now focused on relevant content.
- Clear on-page hierarchies: Every subpage received exactly one H1 heading aligned with its main keyword. The remaining heading structure was rebuilt logically with H2 and H3 headings, while unimportant sitewide elements were no longer marked up as headings and were instead styled via CSS classes.
- Meta data and structured data: We created unique meta titles and meta descriptions for all relevant URLs, with optimal length and clear calls to action. To provide additional context for Google and AI systems, we implemented structured data via Schema.org for products, events, reviews and the organization.
- PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals: To fix the poor loading times, all images were compressed to under 150 KB. We also introduced modern image formats, reduced unused CSS and JavaScript, and activated text compression.
- Usability and SEO basics: We resolved duplicate content issues, for example by differentiating job descriptions, and implemented canonical tags correctly. We also added breadcrumbs for better navigation, filled in missing image alt texts, optimized internal link anchor texts with relevant keywords and improved Open Graph data for social media sharing.
- Accessibility audit in 2025: To prepare for the BFSG, we conducted an in-depth accessibility audit. We identified all critical action points, including missing alt texts for role=”img” elements, necessary ARIA roles for screen reader optimization, insufficient color contrast and missing video subtitles via . This gave Gartenbox Bernau a clear roadmap for making the website more accessible to all users.
Content Offensive
Once the technical foundation was in place, we began a strategic expansion of the website’s content. To send strong E-E-A-T signals to both Google and AI systems, we translated Gartenbox Bernau’s expert knowledge into detailed landing pages and a completely new guide section.
- Building a comprehensive guide section for long-tail keywords: To answer specific user questions, we created a new guide area. One key example is the article on building permits for patio covers in Berlin and Brandenburg. Content like this addresses highly specific pre-purchase questions and signals clear topical authority in the niche.
- Anti-cyclical seasonal content: To reduce the impact of seasonal fluctuations, we created dedicated winter check and spring check guides. These included practical articles on how to prepare robotic lawn mowers or garden irrigation systems for winter.
- Local SEO dominance in Berlin and Brandenburg: To strengthen local visibility and support regional sales, we optimized all core landing pages for Berlin and Brandenburg. This meant strategically including these regional terms in H1 headings, titles and meta descriptions for key pages such as patio covers, irrigation systems and outdoor kitchens.
- Structuring the main revenue-driving topics: The most important product categories were turned into detailed content silos. Outdoor kitchens were split into modular systems, compact systems and custom planning. Robotic lawn mowers received separate pages for models with and without boundary wires, supported by dedicated FAQs. In the grill category, we built specific hubs for ceramic grills, gas grills and smokers.
- Focus on DIY and self-installation: We identified strong potential among technically minded garden owners and created detailed landing pages around topics such as building your own irrigation system, allowing the website to capture valuable DIY search demand.
- Strengthening trust and showroom relevance: We created a dedicated “About us” page and a separate page for the new 200-square-meter showroom, the “Terrassenpark”. The goal was to guide users from online research to an on-site visit. Authentic customer references, clear USPs and personal consultation were also integrated into the first visible section of the homepage.
We Create Digital Leaders!
Step 3
WEVENTURE delivers Results
The combination of technical cleanup, targeted long-tail content and service-oriented landing pages fundamentally transformed Gartenbox Bernau’s digital presence. The result is not only significantly stronger visibility in classic Google search, but also a strong position in the new era of AI search.
Organic click growth via Google
- +93 %
Between February 24 and March 23, 2026, organic Google traffic nearly doubled compared with the same period in the previous year. The new guide content was one of the main traffic drivers.
AI visibility for high-intent prompts
- 64 %
For highly relevant local queries with purchase intent in LLMs such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, Gartenbox Bernau achieved up to 64% visibility in AI-generated recommendations.
Top 10 keywords
- +881 %
The systematic content expansion and targeted long-tail strategy massively increased Gartenbox Bernau’s topical authority on Google. At the start in August 2022, the domain ranked for only 16 relevant keywords in the Top 10. Today, it ranks for 157 relevant search terms on the first page of Google. That equals growth of +881%. The broader visibility also improved significantly: Top 100 keywords increased from 270 to 811, almost tripling with a +200% uplift.
Top 10 URLs
- +380 %
This success was not based on a single lucky ranking or one isolated landing page. It spread across the entire newly developed site architecture. The number of URLs ranking in Google’s Top 10 increased from 5 to 24 since the start of the collaboration, a growth of +380%. Overall URL visibility also improved strongly: Top 100 URLs grew from 10 to 33, an increase of +230%.
Growth in AI Overviews
- +102 %
Within just two months in summer 2025, the website saw a significant increase in appearances as a cited source in Google’s AI-generated search results.
Engagement time
- +25 %
Average active engagement time on the website increased by 19 seconds. This shows that the new content does not just attract clicks, but also provides users with the high-quality information they are looking for.
Ø better Google Rankings
- 50 %
The average Google ranking position of the entire website improved by 49.5% in the 28-day YoY comparison from February 24 to March 23, moving from position 28.1 to 14.2. This means the domain moved forward by more than one full search results page on average within a year. The improvement clearly shows that Google rewarded the combination of a cleaned-up technical foundation and new user-focused service content.
Content as a traffic magnet
A standout example of the content strategy is the guide on building permits for patio covers in Berlin and Brandenburg. The article addresses one of the most important questions users have before making a purchase decision. As a result, the page became a major traffic driver and is now consistently the second most-clicked URL on the entire website via organic Google search.

Learnings
Important Learnings
- Local SEO works best when digital visibility and on-site consultation are connected. For Gartenbox Bernau, the goal was not classic online sales. The strategy focused on turning organic users into consultation bookings and showroom visitors. The 200-square-meter showroom therefore became a central trust and conversion element within the website strategy.
- Technical SEO is not a hygiene factor. It is the foundation for measurable growth. Only after cleaning up the index, fixing H1 structures, optimizing meta data, canonicals, breadcrumbs, alt texts and loading performance could Google properly understand and evaluate the website. The initial mobile PageSpeed score of 26/100 and the LCP of 15.6 seconds were especially critical.
- Content must answer real purchase barriers, not just target keywords. The guide on building permits for patio covers in Berlin and Brandenburg became the second most-clicked URL on the entire website because it answered a key question users had before making a purchase decision.
- Long-tail content can build local authority faster than broad generic content. Specific topics such as preparing garden irrigation systems for winter, patio cover permits in Berlin or outdoor kitchen planning around Berlin achieved strong rankings because they combined local intent, consultation needs and product relevance.
- A successful SEO strategy needs topical silos, not isolated pages. By structuring the main revenue drivers into clear sections such as outdoor kitchens, grills, robotic lawn mowers, irrigation systems and patio covers, the website became visible across a much broader range of searches. This also helped increase the number of Top 10 URLs from 5 to 24.
- Seasonality cannot be removed, but it can be managed strategically. Winter check and spring check guides for robotic lawn mowers and irrigation systems helped capture relevant demand outside the main season and positioned the website as a helpful source throughout the year.
- GEO builds on strong SEO. It does not replace it. Visibility in AI systems did not come from isolated “AI tricks”. It was the result of clean technical structures, in-depth content, strong local signals, structured data and clear E-E-A-T signals. The outcome: up to 64% AI visibility for relevant local purchase prompts.
- Accessibility is becoming a core part of future-ready website strategy. The accessibility audit showed that missing link texts, video subtitles, color contrasts and ARIA roles are not only legally relevant, but also directly affect usability for people with disabilities.
- Visibility growth is more sustainable when it is distributed across many URLs. Gartenbox Bernau’s growth did not depend on one strong page. It was driven by a broader site architecture: Top 10 keywords increased from 16 to 157, Top 100 keywords from 270 to 811 and Top 10 URLs from 5 to 24.
- Trust is a central ranking and conversion factor for premium local retailers. Personal consultation, authentic references, clear USPs, regional proximity and a visible showroom focus were crucial for turning search traffic into qualified enquiries.
