Is your Website really accessible?
Technical fundamentals
Accessibility starts in the code – and often comes down to implementation.
Customizable presentation: Content must remain understandable even without stylesheets or layout structures.
Responsive design: No two-dimensional scrolling (i.e., vertical and horizontal), no fixed orientation.
Keyboard accessibility: The website must be fully operable without a mouse – including the ability to exit menus using the keyboard.
Content & Design
Good design speaks to everyone – provided it considers all users.
Contrast & colors: Minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for body text – logos excluded.
Alt text: Every image, icon, or non-text element needs a textual description.
Link text: The purpose of a link must be clear through text or context alone.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions Questions
Is accessibility legally required?
Which websites are not required to be accessible?
Small businesses with fewer than 10 employees and annual revenues under €2 million are exempt from the BFSG.
However, accessibility still makes sense for them – from a legal, ethical, and business perspective.
Public sector organizations, on the other hand, are required to provide accessible websites regardless of their size.
What does accessibility include?
What does digital accessibility mean?
Digital accessibility means that websites, apps, and digital documents can be used by everyone without external assistance – regardless of vision, mobility, speech, or the use of assistive technologies.
It is based on international standards such as the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
