Yes – for many websites, digital accessibility is a legal obligation. Public sector websites in Germany must comply with the BITV 2.0 (Barrier-Free Information Technology Ordinance). Starting June 28, 2025, the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) will also apply to many private providers – for example, in e-commerce or digital services. ### Which websites are not required to be accessible? Small businesses with fewer than 10 employees and annual revenues under €2 million are exempt from the BFSG. However, accessibility still makes sense for them – from a legal, ethical, and business perspective. Public sector organizations, on the other hand, are required to provide accessible websites regardless of their size. ### What does accessibility include? Digital accessibility covers a wide range of aspects: Technology: e.g. semantic HTML code, keyboard navigation Design: sufficient contrast, scalable font sizes Content: clear language, alt text for images, subtitles for videos The goal is to design websites that are usable for everyone – including people with disabilities. ### What does digital accessibility mean?
